What is the One Piece TCG?
The One Piece Card Game is Bandai’s official trading card game for the ONE PIECE series. The first set, OP-01 Romance Dawn, came out in Japan on July 22, 2022, and in English on December 2, 2022. According to Bandai’s official beginners page, the game launched worldwide to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the ONE PIECE manga.
Since then, Bandai has released a new main set every few months, along with extra boosters, premium boosters and starter decks. The cards feature the Straw Hat Pirates and hundreds of other characters from across the story.

How to play One Piece card game: the basics
Here is how to play One Piece card game matches at a basic level. Each player has a Leader card, a main deck and a separate DON!! deck. You use DON!! cards as your resource to play cards and power up attacks, and you win by knocking out your opponent’s Life.
Deck rules
- 1 Leader card.
- A 50-card main deck that matches your Leader’s color.
- No more than 4 copies of any one card number.
- A separate DON!! deck of exactly 10 cards.
The official play guide explains the rules in full and links to the rule manual.
Card types and colors
There are four main card types: Leader, Character, Event and Stage, plus DON!! cards. Your main deck is built from Characters, Events and Stages. Cards come in six colors (Red, Green, Blue, Purple, Black and Yellow) plus multicolor cards, and your Leader decides which colors your deck can use.
Life and DON!!
Every Leader shows a Life value. At the start of the game, you put that many cards from the top of your deck face down as your Life cards, so the number depends on your Leader. Each turn you add DON!! cards from your DON!! deck, then use them to pay for cards or attach them to your Leader and Characters to make them stronger. When your Leader takes damage, you lose a Life card. Run out of Life and take one more hit, and you lose the game.
Learn for free
Bandai has a free official teaching app, linked from its play guide. It is the easiest way to learn how to play before you buy cards, and the official site recommends starter decks as the best way to begin with real cards.
Rarities and Manga Rares
One Piece cards have a rarity code on each card:
- L: Leader
- C: Common
- UC: Uncommon
- R: Rare
- SR: Super Rare
- SEC: Secret Rare
- TR: Treasure Rare
On top of those, collectors chase special versions:
- Alternate Art (Parallel): the same card with new artwork.
- Manga Rare (Super Alt-Art): the whole card covered in manga panels. Usually the top chase card of a set.
- SP (Special): premium reprints of popular cards with special art.
- Promo (P): cards from events, tournaments and products.
“Manga Rare” is a community name; Bandai calls them Super Alt-Art cards in English.

Why the game is so popular
ONE PIECE is one of the best-selling manga series of all time, so the card game started with a huge built-in fanbase. Fans get cards of their favourite characters and story moments, from Luffy and Zoro to Shanks, Ace and the Four Emperors. Collectors love the artwork, especially the Manga Rares, which turn real manga panels into full-card art.
The game itself is also quick to learn. Every deck uses the same basic structure, games move fast, and there is a new set every few months to keep things fresh. That mix of play and collecting is a big part of its success.
Product lines
One Piece trading cards come in four main product lines:
- OP: main booster sets, like OP-13 to OP-18.
- EB: Extra Boosters, smaller sets with special themes.
- PRB: Premium Boosters, which reprint popular cards.
- ST: Starter Decks, ready-to-play decks for new players.
English cards usually become tournament-legal 7 days after release, though they can be played at your local store’s pre-release events.
English vs Japanese One Piece cards
- English packs usually have 12 cards, with 24 packs per box (288 cards).
- Japanese packs have 6 cards, with 24 packs per box (144 cards).
- Twice the cards does not mean twice the chase hits, so compare what each box can contain before you buy.
The release gap has also closed fast. OP-01 came out in English more than four months after Japan, but OP-17 arrived just six days later, and OP-18 is due in English on November 20, 2026, one day before the Japanese release.
Many collectors buy both. Browse our English One Piece booster boxes and Japanese One Piece booster boxes to compare.
