Why Avatar works as a Magic set

Avatar: The Last Airbender first aired from 2005 to 2008 and is still one of the most loved animated series ever made. Its world of four nations, each tied to an element, lines up naturally with Magic’s color pie, and its large cast of heroes, villains and spirits gives the designers plenty of legendary creatures to work with.

That is why Avatar MTG feels so true to the show. Bending becomes a set of mechanics, each episode gets a Source Material card, and the scene cards recreate key moments from all three books.

Avatar the Last Airbender MTG card list

The main set has 286 cards: 20 mythics, 60 rares, 110 uncommons, 81 commons and 15 basic lands, according to the official collecting article and retailer set lists.

The four bending mechanics

  • Firebending N: adds red mana when the creature attacks.
  • Airbending: exiles a permanent or spell, and its owner may recast it later for an alternative cost.
  • Waterbending: a cost you can partly pay by tapping artifacts and creatures.
  • Earthbending N: turns a land into a 0/0 creature with haste and N +1/+1 counters, which returns tapped if it dies.

Returning mechanics include double-faced Sagas, Lessons, Exhaust, Clues and Shrines.

Booster Fun treatments

  • 61 Source Material cards, one for every episode of the show.
  • Battle pose cards, including 4 textless neon-ink foils that are only in Collector Boosters.
  • 5 borderless double-faced Saga mythics.
  • Field notes, elemental frame and scene cards for Book 1, Book 2 and Book 3.

The best Avatar MTG cards

Raised-foil Avatar Aang

The headline card is a raised-foil, double-faced borderless Avatar Aang. It appears in fewer than 1% of Collector Boosters and is by far the most valuable card in the set.

Eternal reprints

Many of the most valuable Avatar MTG cards are TLE reprints of Eternal staples with Avatar art. In December 2025, cards like Deflecting Swat, Fierce Guardianship, The Great Henge (as The Banyan Tree), Force of Negation, Teferi’s Protection, Enlightened Tutor and Mystic Remora led the value chart.

Main-set and character cards

Main-set standouts include Badgermole Cub; Wan Shi Tong, Librarian; The Walls of Ba Sing Se; and Appa, Steadfast Guardian. Popular TLE character cards include Toph, Earthbending Master; Avatar Roku, Firebender; Katara, Waterbending Master; Zuko, Firebending Master; and Avatar Kyoshi, Earthbender.

Drafting and playing

The set is a fun Limited format. Firebending rewards aggressive attacks, Airbending lets you reset the board on your terms, Waterbending makes your creatures and artifacts part of your mana, and Earthbending turns your lands into threats. If you are new, Jumpstart is the quickest way to play: pick two half-decks, shuffle them together and start.

Collecting Avatar MTG cards

Collectors have plenty of goals. Some chase every Source Material card, one for each episode, while others go after the battle pose cards, the borderless Sagas or the TLE character cards of Aang, Katara, Toph and Zuko. The raised-foil Aang is the grail. Whatever you collect, sleeve your Avatar MTG cards straight away, especially foils.
