The Hobbit MTG release dates
The set released worldwide on tabletop on August 14, 2026, with MTG Arena on August 11 and prerelease events from August 7 to 13. The Gift Bundle followed on September 4, 2026. The official Hobbit product page lists all the products.
MTG Hobbit spoilers started around Gen Con, which ran from July 30 to August 2, 2026, and the set was followed by Standard Showdown events and Commander Parties in August and September.
The set uses two codes: HOB for the main set and HOC for Eternal-legal cards (legal in Commander, Legacy and Vintage), including the Scene Box cards.

From The Lord of the Rings to The Hobbit
MTG The Hobbit is the second Middle-earth set in Magic’s Universes Beyond line. The 2023 Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth set was a huge hit, famous for its serialized One Ring, and this follow-up goes back to the story that started it all. Bilbo’s journey with Thorin and the dwarves, the riddles with Gollum and the battle against Smaug all appear in card form.
The two sets fit well together. Collectors of the first set can add this one to the same binder, and Commander players can mix cards from both into Middle-earth themed decks.
The Hobbit MTG card list
According to the official collecting article, the main set has 193 cards: 60 commons, 55 uncommons, 53 rares, 15 mythic rares, plus 5 common dual lands and 5 basic lands.
New and returning mechanics
- Storied: control three or more artifacts, legendaries or Sagas with a storied permanent to earn a permanent “enduring story”.
- Recruit: draw, then discard. If you discard a nonland card, you make a 1/1 Human Soldier token.
- Hone counters: each one gives an Equipment +1/+0.
- Returning: Adventures and Amass.
Booster Fun treatments
- 40 Middle-earth classic artist borderless mythics, which are also the box toppers.
- 5 Dwarvish language mythics, only in Collector Boosters.
- Book cover cards (4 rares and 6 mythics).
- A dragon hoard frame for uncommons, rares and mythics.
- Scene cards, extended art cards, 5 journey basics and 4 seasonal Hobbit Plains.
The best cards in MTG The Hobbit
Gold Smaug
The headliner is a gleaming gold Smaug the Magnificent. There are about 500 copies, found only in Collector Boosters in any language and always printed in English. It is the card every collector of the set wants.
Borderless and showcase surge foils
The most valuable cards in August 2026 were mostly surge foil Booster Fun versions:
- Gleaming Splendor, a borderless surge foil mythic, top of the value list.
- The Arkenstone, in borderless and showcase surge foil.
- Gandalf, Goblins’ Bane, borderless surge foil.
- Bilbo, Thief in the Night, showcase surge foil.
- Smaug the Magnificent, in borderless and showcase surge foil.
- Thorin, Mountain-King, borderless surge foil.
- Thranduil, the Elvenking and Smaug, Wicked Worm, borderless surge foils.
Before release, cards like Beorn the Fierce, The Queen of Dale, Gollum, Riddle Master, Elrond, Moon-Reader and Orcrist, Goblin-cleaver were also picked out as ones to watch.
Drafting the set
Play Boosters are built for draft and sealed, and The Hobbit MTG set has a clear identity thanks to its mechanics. Storied rewards you for building up artifacts, legendaries and Sagas, Recruit helps you smooth your draws while making tokens, and hone counters make Equipment stronger over time. Draft Night is the easiest way to draft at home with a group of four.
The Hobbit MTG products and boxes
Play Booster box
A Play Booster box holds 30 packs plus 1 box topper, a traditional foil Middle-earth classic artist card. Each pack has 14 cards and a token: 7 commons, 3 uncommons, a wildcard, a rare or mythic, a traditional foil and a land. The Hobbit Play Booster box is the best way to draft or open lots of packs.
Collector Booster box
A Collector Booster box holds 12 packs plus a box topper. Each pack is full of foils and Booster Fun cards, and this is the only place to find the gold Smaug and the Dwarvish language mythics.
Bundle vs Gift Bundle
- Bundle: 9 Play Boosters, foil seasonal Hobbit basics, 30 basic lands with journey basics, a foil promo, 2 reference cards, an oversized spindown and a storage box.
- Gift Bundle: released September 4, with the same 9 Play Boosters plus 1 Collector Booster and surge foil full-art seasonal Hobbit basics.
The Gift Bundle is the better pick if you want a Collector Booster and the surge foil lands, and it makes a great present for a Middle-earth fan.
Scene Boxes
The Scene Box: Crack the Plates and its companion, Scene Box: Treasures of Smaug, each have 3 Play Boosters, 6 traditional foil borderless scene cards that form one panorama, 6 art cards and a display easel. The scene cards are Eternal-legal (HOC), not Standard-legal.

- Prerelease Pack: 6 Play Boosters, a foil rare or mythic, 4 full-art seasonal basics, a deck box and a spindown.
