Pokémon 30th Anniversary: 30 Years of Pokémon Cards and What 2026 Brings

The Pokémon 30th anniversary is the biggest celebration the franchise has had in a decade, and the trading card game is right at the center of it. This guide explains the key dates, when Pokémon cards first came out, what the new anniversary logo means and how the Pokémon TCG is marking 30 years in 2026.

When is the Pokémon 30th anniversary?

The official date is February 27, 2026. That is Pokémon Day, exactly 30 years after Pocket Monsters Red and Green launched in Japan on February 27, 1996. The Pokémon Company started the countdown early: an animated anniversary logo showing Pikachu through the eras was posted on December 31, 2025.

Pokémon Day 2026 events ran from February 26 to March 1, and a Pokémon Presents broadcast aired on February 27. That presentation included a segment looking back at three decades of the card game and ended with a tease of a commemorative card set, which we cover below.

The card game has its own birthday

The trading card game is slightly younger than the franchise. The first Japanese expansion pack came out on October 20, 1996, which means the card game itself turned 30 on October 20, 2026, about eight months after the franchise anniversary. For collectors, 2026 is a double celebration.

When did Pokémon cards come out?

If you are wondering when did Pokémon cards come out, there are two answers. In Japan, Media Factory released the original Expansion Pack, now known as Base Set, on October 20, 1996. In the United States, Wizards of the Coast released the English Base Set on January 9, 1999, with 102 cards including the famous holographic Charizard.

Those first cards started a hobby that now spans thousands of cards, dozens of expansions and players in many countries. Many collectors who opened Base Set packs as kids are now opening anniversary products with their own children.

Thirty years of change

A lot has changed since Base Set. Wizards of the Coast published the English cards until 2003, when the job passed to the company now known as The Pokémon Company International. Card designs moved from simple holofoils to Pokémon-EX, GX, V and VMAX, and then back to Pokémon ex in the Scarlet and Violet era.

Rarity has changed even more. Early sets had commons, uncommons, rares and holo rares. Modern sets add illustration rares, special illustration rares and gold hyper rares, which is why today’s chase cards are often full-scene artworks rather than a single shiny Pokémon. Packs changed too: Japanese and English packs now differ in size and pull rates, and many collectors buy both.

One thing has stayed the same. Pikachu, Charizard, Mew and Mewtwo are still the cards everyone wants, and the 30th Celebration set leans into exactly that history.

If you want a taste of how those early decks felt, the Japanese Pokémon Trading Card Game Classic decks recreate the original style of play with modern card stock.

The Pokémon 30th anniversary logo is built around the number 30. The 3 is colored to match a Pokémon, and the 0 is drawn as a Poké Ball. The Pokémon Company made 1,025 versions of it, one for every species, so every fan can find their favorite.

Fans were also invited to make their own version through the official anniversary website or in Pokémon GO and share it with #Pokemon30. That is why you will see so many slightly different logos on social media this year.

On the card game side, the logo first appeared on the metallic coin inside the Pokémon Day 2026 Collection. That box released on January 30, 2026, with a foil Pikachu promo stamped for Pokémon Day 2026, the coin and three booster packs. The 30th Celebration binder is another product that carries the anniversary branding on its cover.

How the Pokémon TCG is celebrating 30 years

The 30th Celebration set

The headline is a brand-new set called 30th Celebration. It was first teased at the February Presents, announced on June 1, 2026, and released on September 16, 2026. According to the official Pokémon announcement, it is the first expansion launched at the same time around the world, alongside the Japanese MEGA 30th Celebration pack.

Every pack contains five foil cards, one foil Basic Energy and a code card, and each pack includes one of 30 different Pikachu cards. The set’s headline cards are futuristic-style Mew ex and Mewtwo ex illustrated by the artist YOSHIROTTEN. Our 30th Celebration set guide covers the card list and chase cards in detail.

Anniversary products and pre-orders

Alongside the set there is a full range of 30th anniversary Pokémon products: an Elite Trainer Box, booster bundles, Ultra-Premium Collections, tins, figure collections, battle decks and more. Some of them are still on pre-order. See every box, its contents and its release date in our 30th Celebration products and pre-orders guide, or browse the full 30th Celebration range.

Beyond the card game

The celebration reaches the rest of the Pokémon world too. Pokémon TCG Pocket ran its own 30th anniversary event with in-game rewards, and the 2026 Pokémon World Championships took place in San Francisco in August alongside the Pokémon XP fan event.

A short history of Pokémon anniversary sets

The 30th Celebration set follows a tradition of special releases every five years:

  • 20th anniversary (2016): Generations released on February 22, 2016, with 83 cards plus a 32-card Radiant Collection. Later that year, Evolutions brought back Base Set artwork.
  • 25th anniversary (2021): Celebrations released on October 8, 2021, with 25 new cards and 25 Classic Collection reprints of famous older cards.
  • 30th anniversary (2026): 30th Celebration released on September 16, 2026, the first worldwide same-day launch.

We compare all three in our Pokémon anniversary sets guide. If you missed the earlier sets, we still stock the Generations Elite Trainer Box and the Celebrations Elite Trainer Box.

Why anniversary products matter to collectors

Every Pokémon anniversary mixes nostalgia with new cards. Reprints and classic artwork bring back older fans, while new chase cards give modern collectors something to hunt. Anniversary products also tend to be remembered long after release, because they mark a moment in the hobby rather than just another expansion.

That said, buy what you enjoy. Prices of singles and sealed product go up and down, so treat any purchase as a collectible first. If you plan to keep boxes sealed, store them upright in a cool, dry room away from sunlight.
